>India’s Largest Mosque to be built in Kerala by Sunni Markaz

> Kozhikode: India’s largest mosque is planned to be built in Kozhikode covering an area of 12 acres on the sprawling ‘Knowledge City’ complex of Islamic religious and Cultural Jamia Markazu Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya near here. Estimated to cost Rs 40 crore for construction, the mosque would be able to accommodate 25,000 people for prayer at a time, Markazu sources here said. According to Riyaz Muhammad,the Thrissur-based architect who has done the design for the mosque,the magnificent structure would be following the Mughal architectural style. “It would strictly follow the green-building concept so that the built-up area will harmoniously blend with the greenery around”, Riyaz told reporters.

While the building alone would cover an area of 8 acres, it would surrounded by a green-blet and beautiful garden of four acres, he said. Largest Indian Masjid Besides the vast prayer hall, the complex would have auditorium for conducting seminars, huge library and facilities for accommodating over 1000 people at a time. “This has been conceived as a grand mosque, which will also be one of India’s important Islamic cultural centre”, Markazu sources said. The work on the mosque would begin within five months and it would be completed in less than two years. Located at Karanthur about 10 km from Kozhikode, Markazu is a leading Islamic centre of learning and charity, headed by religious scholar Kanthapuram A P Aboobker Ahmed Musliyar. PTI 09/02/2011
